What Split Ends???

Once upon a time there was a girl name Little Red Splitting Ends who lived in state of disbelief concerning her raggedy hair. Everyone always knew when Little Red had been in the vicinity due to the trail of split ends she’d leave behind. In her imagination, her hair cascaded down her back and was the epitomy of health. But, to the rest of the world, all Little Red had was a head full of shoulder length, frizzy, split ends; we all know the type.

Tired of cleaning Little Red’s trail of split ends, her best friend and longtime hair stylist suggested that  she get a much needed and long over due hair treatment and trim. Well, you would have thought that Little Red Splitting Ends was having a seizure! As her body jolted, she frantically exclaimed, “I just had a  trim three years ago, and I’m appalled by your suggestion. Quite frankly, I think your scissor happy hands are just jealous!” With that statement, an enraged Little Red Splitting Ends stormed off. Now of course as her best friend and hair stylist, she was more than accustomed to this type of reaction, so she decided to allow her irate friend time to cool off.

Well, well, well, looky here, wouldn’t you know it, Little Red Splitting Ends comes into the hair salon the very next week, ranting and raving about how “Oprah” said, that her stylist gives her a hair treatment every week and trims her hair every three months to prevent the ends from bifurcating (splitting). Which, btw (by the way) is exactly what her best friend has been telling her for the past fifteen years. But, who cares, all she wants is for Little Red Splitting Ends to get her hair treatments and those ends trimmed more regularly, so she can stop leaving behind that unsightly trail of split ends everywhere she goes.

The moral of this story is, you must deep condition and moisturise your hair weekly and STOP being afraid to get your ends trimmed! Your ends will require a trim on a quarterly basis (that’s every three months.) For those who are experiencing shedding, dry, frizzy or split ends, you will need a trim more frequently. Also, if you are leaving behind an abundance of  hair  every time you comb it, then that may be an indication that it’s about that time.

A trim should not affect the appearance of you having long hair. If you feel as though your stylist is “scissor happy”, and taking off too much when she trims your hair, simply have a talk with her and express your concerns. The more you eliminate the split ends, the more likely your are to notice the growth because the ends will stop breaking off, and your hair will be a lot healthier as well.

It may help if you think of it this way, imagine that each of your split ends is a peeling banana, (I know it sound weird, but work with me here). Now, what’s the only way to prevent the peel from continuing until it exposes the banana? Yes, you’ve got to cut it! Otherwise, it will continue to peel until the banana is fully exposed. In other words, your splitting ends will continue to split, until your scalp is exposed. LoL. Now, all of you Little Red Splitting Ends out there, go and get yourselves a treatment and a trim. Remember, denial will not prevent the inevitable, if you ignore those split ends, you hair will simply get shorter and shorter.

Hey, got any hair related concerns, questions or stories? I’d love to hear from you,  post your comments  now.
